The project targets two key ecological regions in Mozambique—the Rovuma-Lugenda Landscape (20 million ha) and the Gorongosa-Marromeu Landscape (6.3 million ha)—with the goal of improving the management of over 7 million hectares, including both protected areas and adjacent landscapes. Key interventions focus on reducing deforestation, improving forest degradation status, managing fire regimes, and promoting agroforestry. In the Vunduzi corridor and five Coutadas (Lureco, Nipepe, Nungo, Nicage, Marangira), critical biodiversity corridors are at risk of degradation and deforestation. The project aims to reduce deforestation in Vunduzi from 3.77% to 1% per year, protecting forest cover and limiting degradation. In the Coutadas, deforestation is expected to be reduced to zero, while fire intensity is halved.
Additionally, 10,000 ha of cropland will be converted into agroforestry systems, contributing to improved land productivity and carbon sequestration. These interventions are expected to result in total emissions reductions of 18.7 million tCO₂eq over 20 years, as estimated using the EX-ACT tool. The project will directly benefit 500,000 people—with a strong emphasis on gender equality by ensuring that at least 50% of beneficiaries are women—across a total landscape population of 2.3 million. Through these combined actions, the project aims to enhance climate resilience, ecosystem integrity, and sustainable livelihoods in two of Mozambique’s most important conservation landscapes.
